ATHLETICS. Mikhail Butov: we have already made the list of athletes whom we don’t wish to see at our competitions

The Union of organizers of the main competitons on the athletics calendar Euromeetings and the Association of athletes’ managers decided to refuse from partnership with the athletes who have been suspended not less than for two years. The director of marketing of the All-Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF) Mikhail Butov commented the possible consequences of this step to the Agency of sport information “All Sport”.

“The question about not inviting the athletes who came back after doping disqualification was first raised during the meeting of the Association of managers of the competitions in the year 2004 in Budapest, -- Mikhail Butov said. -- The discussion lasted very long, but there is still no unanimity for the moment. The majority, however, tended to the decision, which was made during the recent meeting of the Association of the managers in Miami-Beech and during our meeting in Malta in October. Moreover, to tell the truth, we have already made the list of athletes, whom we don’t wish to invite to our competitions. It is rather a big list, and it is not final. To speak about the announcement of Tatiana Lysenko’s manager Pavel Voronkov that the new rules won’t be observed, here we touch upon the common problem of the professional unions. Certainly, our Union has got formal rules, but it is associative on professional characteristics. We have no other mutual obligations. And, although, the decision was formed officially and is obligatory for all the members of the Association, here the gentlemen’s agreements often come to force all the same. We have no sanctions, but it is said in the Charter that all the members of the Association who don’t follow its decisions may be excluded. The situation with managers is quite different: if all the important tournaments are included in the Euromeetings, not all the managers of the leading athletes are the members of the Association. I think Pavel’s comments were caused just by this fact: he very well realizes that in this case the athlete can just go to the manager who isn’t the member of the Association. But here all the same he will have to co-operate with us -- the organizers of the competitions. I don’t think that these decisions will limit the number of acting athletes. There are almost no famous names in the list which I mentioned. There is maximum a dozen of known names, and they are not defining the image of the athletics today. What stars that have been suspended for the recent time can you name? Certainly, nobody believes now that Justin Gatlin will come back to the same level after eight years, or Marion Jones will wish to run again in two years of her disqualification. For the moment we can say about our decision for the next years. Later we will see”.

ATHLETICS. Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident and a person’s death
The famous Russian runner, 800 m Olympic champion Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident that happened at night September, 30 – October, 1 in Zhukovsky, Moscow region. The car accident resulted in a man’s death but the criminal case was not even started.
