BIATHLON. Ole Einar Bjoerndalen: I just have no right to express my own opinion about the conflict in the Russian biathlon

The five-time Olympic Champion Norwegian Ole Einar Bjoerndalen has recently become the fatal figure for the Russian biathlon. He competed with the Russians at the stages of the World Cup alternating the first-second places with Dmitry Yaroshenko, losing to Ivan Cherezov and winning against all the Russians together in the relay. And in the meantime as the member of the athletes commission of the International Biathlon Union (IBU) he took part in the discussion of the case of the captain of the Russian team Sergey Rozhkov, who, in spite of the opinion of the head coach of the male team Vladimir Alikin, wasn’t included in the application form for the stage of the World Cup in Hochfilzen. In the exclusive interview to the editor of the Agency of sport information “All Sport” Natalia Maryanchik Ole Einar Bjoerndalen expressed his opinion on all the questions.

-- Ole Einar, what can you say of the start of your season?
-- I am satisfied. One of my goals for this year is winning of the World Cup overall. For the moment I am the leader, so everything goes according to the plan. I also hope on the success at the World Championship.

-- Does the constant competition with the Russians worry you? You competed very close with Dmitry Yarishenko, lost to Ivan Cherezov…
-- There are no special or principal competitors for me. I go on start to win against everybody. It is not important for me if they are German, French or Russian. The Russians are really very strong, you have four-five elite athletes. But I can’t distinguish one of them.

-- The progress of Dmitry Yaroshenko doesn’t surprise you? He began winning the prize places regularly in the age over 30 years old, recently, he won for the first time at the stage of the World Cup.
-- No, I am not surprised. Yaroshenko is really a very strong athlete. He is progressing, and it is obviously the result of a big work at the trainings. You work and you improve your result, there is nothing special.

-- In Hochfilzen you as the member of the IBU athletes’ commission took part in the discussion of the case of the captain of the Russian team Sergey Rozhkov, who made all the criteria of the selection but wasn’t included in the application of the Russian team. Is the interference of the IBU possible?
-- No. According to the rules if you want to start at the stage of the World Cup you must be included in the application form of your National federation. It is impossible to compete just for yourself. So, if the Russian federation didn’t included Rozhkov in the form, he has no right to compete at the stage. Why it happened can be explained by the problems inside the Russian federation, but not our. Sergey is a great athlete. But the IBU won’t interfere in the business of the national federations.

-- You have spoken to Rozhkov personally. Have you defined for yourself who is right and who is guilty in the conflict in the Russian biathlon?
-- I have no idea. This question is too difficult for me -- a person who is just the observer. There are a lot of political nuances which I just don’t know. No, I won’t interfere in the politics. I just have no right to express my opinion based on the information I have.

-- Then I have easier question. Are you going to combine cross country and biathlon further?
-- In this season I won’t compete in the cross country for sure. I plan to take part in all the stages of the Biathlon World Cup, and there is just no time for cross country. And about the next season, the season of the World Cross Country Championship, we will see. I have no settled plan yet.

ATHLETICS. Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident and a person’s death
The famous Russian runner, 800 m Olympic champion Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident that happened at night September, 30 – October, 1 in Zhukovsky, Moscow region. The car accident resulted in a man’s death but the criminal case was not even started. Agency of sport information “All Sport” has learnt it from the personal trainer of Yury Borzakovsky – Vyacheslav Evstratov.
