BIATHLON. The Russian biathlon fan-club wants IBU to return the banner “TikhonOFF BiathlON” and the flag with the autographs of the members of the Russian Biathlon Team

On December, 11 at 14.45 Moscow time Liana Minasyan and Olga Sukhanova, the founders and the administrators of the popular web-site www.biathlon-russia.ru, the members of the Russian biathlon fan-club which unites almost 3000 registered members all over the World, sent to the heads of the International Biathlon Union (IBU) -- the President Anders Besseberg, the General Secretary Michael Geistlinger and the Vice-President responsible for marketing Alfons Hörmann letters in Russian, English and Norwegian about the illegal actions of the director of the competitions Franz Berger and people wearing the IBU uniform. During the second stage of the World Cup in the Austrian town Hochfilzen they with the help of physical force balked accredited as the journalists Olga Sukhanova and Olga Zakomoldina and confiscated banner “TikhonOFF BiathlON” and the Russian flag with the autographs of the members of the Russian Biathlon team. The Agency of sport information “All Sport” publishes this letter to the heads of the IBU without any changes.

“Dear Mr. Besseberg,
Dear Sirs,

This letter has been inspired by the incident on December 9 at the World Cup stage in Hoсhfilzen, when before the men's relay, people wearing the IBU uniform balked two representatives of our edition, Ms. Sukhanova and Ms. Zakomoldina, and conveyed them by force under the stands.

Reasons for applying force to our representatives were not explained: the personnel refused to understand and speak either English, or Norwegian, or Russian, i.e., any language our correspondents could use.

Under the stands, our representatives were met by Mr. Franz Berger, who, as it turned out later, was an IBU race director, and by another IBU representative, who also preferred to speak German.

The people in the IBU uniform gave them the tube that had been on the stands near our representatives. The tube contained a banner and a Russian flag with autographs of the members of our picked team. The tube was opened, and the flag and the banner were confiscated by the IBU associates. The accreditation badges of our colleagues were torn off. After this, our correspondents were seen off to the door, again without any explanations.

Only upon the intervention of Sergey Rozhkov, the Russian team's captain, and his telephone talks, our colleagues learnt that this, in fact, police action had been initiated by Mr. Berger.
Since we failed to receive any intelligible explanation then and there, we insist that you should explain to us now:

- on whose order Mr. Berger took such inadequate measures to our representatives: they did not disturb the public peace; they were merely going to do their work at the stadium (our portal has been writing about biathlon events both in Russia and abroad for more than five years);

- on what grounds our colleagues were illegally searched and deprived of their things;

- whether Mr. Berger can convincingly prove that a Russian flag is an illegal attribute at an area where IBU competitions take place; and, if not, why he decided to withdraw it together with the banner;

- whether Mr. Berger has convincing grounds to believe that the banner BiathlOn TikhonOFF (this banner is devoted to the situation in the Russian picked team) contradicts IBU principles and requires IBU censorship and how Mr. Berger managed to make out the content of the rolled banner through a nontransparent casing; and

- whether Mr. Berger can confirm on behalf of the IBU that the content of the banner undermines the IBU authority, while the membership of a person officially convicted according to the Russian laws in its Executive Committee does not.

Dear sirs, we regard this incident with our representatives as an act of outrage and have a right to demand explanations and apologies. The act of detention has been photoed by press photographers, and we reserve the right to address mass media and human rights organizations to make this episode public. As a matter of fact, this incident has already caused resonance in Russian mass media.

However, before taking any further actions, we would like to know the IBU reaction to the incident.

The famous Russian runner, 800 m Olympic champion Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident that happened at night September, 30 – October, 1 in Zhukovsky, Moscow region. The car accident resulted in a man’s death but the criminal case was not even started.
