MOTORSPORT. Semen Yakubov: Our car for "Dakar-2008" was once dropped from a height of around five kilometers – and it ran!

On December 22nd, on the traditional Vasilyevsky slope in Moscow the symbolic launch of the "KAMAZ-Master" team for the legendary "Dakar -2008" rally, which will run from January 5th to the 20th, took place. The leader of "KAMAZ-Master", Semen Yakubov, explained to the Agency of Sport Information "All Sport" the special features of the new "KAMAZ" model in which the team’s three crews will compete in the race.

“In previous years we contested the Dakar in the "KAMAZ-4911" model, - recounted Semen Yakubov. - This year the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) stiffened the stock production requirements for the vehicles. Earlier for an automobile to be considered a production vehicle, it was sufficient for 15 such machines to come off the line per year; now it’s 50 in two years. The "4911" series didn’t meet this requirement, so we decided to take the "KAMAZ-4326 VK" model as the basis, thousands of which are produced by our plant. I remember a time when we tested it, it was dropped from an aircraft flying at the height of 5000 m. While descending some of the parachutes failed, the worst possible force majeure occurred, the machine crashed... and it ran as if nothing were the matter! Naturally, before preparing for the race we changed a lot in it – in accordance with the new FIA rules, all the details were certified by production personnel. "Crude work" is now categorically forbidden. For example, we moved the engine back by 400 mm, and the cab 200 mm. Thanks to the increased weight of the automobile, and the free 200 mm of space behind the cabin, we added radiators, fans, air ducts and other cooling systems. Furthermore, since the wheel and bumper are now close to each other, the automobile became more maneuverable. Earlier, when coming down off a steep dune, we would catch the bumper on the surface, but now the machine comes to a horizontal position without any special interference. On today’s date, after passing numerous inspections, tests and problems, we feel that we’ve never seen anything better or more reliable than this version.”

Semen Yakubov also added that at the present moment, the "KAMAZ-4326 VK" has passed the "homogulation" procedure and it completely conforms to all criteria put forth by the organizers of the race. “Thus, today our automobile is the only one in its class to officially conform to the technical requirements of the federation. None of KAMAZ’s the distinguished competitors have thus far passed homogulation,” noted Yakubov.

The famous Russian runner, 800 m Olympic champion Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident that happened at night September, 30 – October, 1 in Zhukovsky, Moscow region. The car accident resulted in a man’s death but the criminal case was not even started. Agency of sport information “All Sport” has learnt it from the personal trainer of Yury Borzakovsky – Vyacheslav Evstratov.
