ATHLETICS. Valentin Balakhnichev: For the moment I only regret one thing – that I got mixed up in this matter, wishing to help

The claims of the multiple World record holder, the European champion in the women’s hammer throw, Tatiana Lysenko, exposed in the use of the forbidden substances, and her coach Nikolai Beloborodov, to the All-Russian Athletic Federation (ARAF) and its President, council member of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), Valentin Balakhnichev, are directed to the wrong address. Valentin Balakhnichev commented himself on the statements of Lysenko and Beloborodov to the Agency of Sport Information "All Sport".

“The questions, words, statements of Tatiana Lysenko and her coach Nikolai Beloborodov – these are their choices, their personal positions, -- Valentin Balakhnichev began. -- In this situation I can feel sorry about only one thing – that I got mixed up in this matter, wishing to help. Recall that the ARAF didn’t begin to disqualify Lysenko and Khoroshikh for two years, as is standard in similar cases. We sought an informal solution to the problem. Having accepted at the national level the attitude that the athletes and coach should receive no sanctions, we entered discussion with the IAAF about shortening the period of disqualification to one year. Although, by and large, they haven’t tried to resolve their own matter. Judge for yourself: Lysenko, Khoroshikh and Beloborodov, along with former Russian team head coach Valery Kulichenko were the colleagues at the Rossport’s sport training center, and received a wage there. At some point a problem arose for them with the IAAF regarding the use of a forbidden substance. Logically the athletes and coaches must resolve the dispute with the IAAF. The federation is a voluntary mediator in this case, nothing more. If we had immediately disqualified Lysenko and Khoroshikh for two years, they would have been forced to fight for a reduction of the period alone, for example, through arbitration in Lausanne. In the last couple days I’ve met with both coach Beloborodov and the athlete Lysenko, and I didn’t understand their ultimatum, their declaration that a decision on this matter must be made no later than the end of January. Making an ultimatum to me is useless. It’s not my decision, but the IAAF’s. The question is fundamentally not in my jurisdiction, and not within the jurisdiction of the ARAF. The Federation came in on the athletes’ side trying to help; conducting correspondence, formulating arguments in their defense. But now they’ve proven to be hostages to their own position. It’s sad for me to realize this. I repeat, now I regret just one thing – that on my own volition, wishing to help the atheletes, I got involved in this matter.”

Valentin Balakhnichev also commented on Nikolai Beloborodov’s statements that the former head coach of the team, Valery Kulichenko, continues working as the state athletics coach. “We’re in no way able to influence this situation. Unfortunately, under Russian law the dismissal of employees in a case like this is not prescribed. On what basis should the TSSP discharge Kulichenko? On the basis of the statements in the press from Beloborodov and Lysenko? I’m afraid this is insufficient. But there is no other proof against Kulichenko. In this whole situation I would advise both sides not to shift the responsibility to other shoulders, and to resolve all mutual claims in a court of law. If Beloborodov, Lysenko, Khoroshikh, and Kulichenko want to prove something – the court of law is for this. They can open the matter against whoever is convenient, but then we will obtain a formal basis for the investigations. Now there are too many emotions in this matter”, -- concluded Valentin Balakhnichev.

ATHLETICS. Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident and a person’s death
The famous Russian runner, 800 m Olympic champion Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident that happened at night September, 30 – October, 1 in Zhukovsky, Moscow region. The car accident resulted in a man’s death but the criminal case was not even started. Agency of sport information “All Sport” has learnt it from the personal trainer of Yury Borzakovsky – Vyacheslav Evstratov.
