OLYMPICS. Russian medalists of the Olympic Games in Beijing will get from the State not 50-20-10 thousand dollar, but 100-60-40 thousand euro

The Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) in cooperation with the Ministry of sports, tourism and youth affairs of the Russian Federation has sent to the RF Government the project of changes in the order of the RF Government №1221-r from September, 11, 2007, which concerns the amount of prize money of the winners and medalists of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Beijing. According to the project the winners of the Games 2008 will get in rubles the sum, equivalent to 100 thousand euro, silver medalists -- 60 thousand euro, and bronze medalists -- 40 thousand euro. The president of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), Senator Leonid Tyagachev told about it to the Agency of sport information “All Sport”.

“The question about the amount of the State prize-money to the winners and medalists of the Olympic Games has been discussed recently very actively, -- Leonid Tyagachev said. -- The prize-money in allocation 50-20-10 thousand dollar for the first-second-third places at the Games exist since 1996. But in 1996 it was possible to buy a flat in Moscow for 50 thousand dollars, while for the moment it is absolutely unreal! Dmitry Svischev asked the question on this theme during the last hearings in Parliament, in which I took part together with the Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko. Certainly, we can’t say that the success of the Olympic and Paralympic athletes w as inadequately compensed. Thanks to the “Russian Olympians Foundation”, which is lead by the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev and financed by ten leading Russian businessmen, thanks to the regions and sponsors the champions and medalists of the Olympic Games receive very serious sums of money. But, prize-money from the government are important not only as money, but as parameter of attitude of the State to sports and athletes. Everybody knows very well on many examples how well the State attitudes to the athletes and Olympians. I hope in the nearest future we will get another acknowledgement of it. Yesterday in the State Duma Vitaly Mutko announced the preparing increasing of the prize-money. And it wasn’t just a pretext, the ROC together with the Ministry of sports have been working at this question for a long time. And yesterday we sent to the RF Government the consolidated offer -- the project of changes in the order of the RF Government №1221-r from September, 11, 2007. The winners of the Games 2008 will get 100 thousand, silver medalists -- 60 thousand, and bronze medalists -- 40 thousand. And all the sums will be in euro. I can’t say that all the decisions are just formality. But, certainly, we took all these sums not from the air, we had consultations, discussed… Our State is strong and reach, the President and the Prime-Minister everything know and understand. I hope this order with the new sums will be signed in the nearest future, and for the medals of the Games in Beijing our boys and girls will get other prize-money”.

ATHLETICS. Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident and a person’s death
The famous Russian runner, 800 m Olympic champion Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident that happened at night September, 30 – October, 1 in Zhukovsky, Moscow region. The car accident resulted in a man’s death but the criminal case was not even started. Agency of sport information “All Sport” has learnt it from the personal trainer of Yury Borzakovsky – Vyacheslav Evstratov.
