Alexander Katushev: Universiade Games are a great chance to test young athletes, to reveal the future champions

Yesterday, on July, 12, in Belgrade the XXV Summer Universiade Games ended. The Russian team has gained a convincing victory in total medals count, won 76 medals, including 27 gold. The executive director of “The Russian Olympians Foundation” Alexander Katushev evaluated the prestige of this victory to the Agency of sport information "All Sport".

“The victory at the Universiade in Belgrade is, certainly, a very important event in the Russian sports that, which is especially pleasant, has coincided with the Year of Youth in Russia, - Alexander Katushev noticed. - But, the point is not just in the victory itself, but how this victory was achieved. We started at the ninth team place, and by the last days the team managed to rise to the first place and won in all aspects: and in total number of medals, and in gold medals. If you remember the Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing, there we had the same tendency. We started not very well, but in the last days we managed to overcome the team of Great Britain and get the third place in total medal count. What does it mean? It means that Russian team has some strong kinds of sport, where we traditionally win the main part of medals. Both at the Olympic Games, and at the Universiade we won in athletics, in rhythmic gymnastics. So, I think that we should pay more attention to these kinds of sport in methodology, preparation of reserves, creation of conditions and so on. That is why it is our “golden reserve”, which regularly brings us to the leaders. Next, let’s see who is in the total medal count of the Universiade behind us? They are teams of China, Japan, and South Korea. Taking into consideration that the Asian countries have become stronger for the latest time in winter sports, we can assume that they will become our main competitors at the Olympic Games 2010 in Vancouver - on the level, on which we really are and potentially pretend”.

Alexander Katushev also evaluated the status of the Universiade in comparison with the main competitions in sport World - Olympic Games. “Universiades are very important, mostly for those countries where professional sports develop on the base of University sports. Here I mean the USA, but in China they don’t hide that they are going to use the American system. In Russia we also develop the University sports, and in the year of Youth dynamically enough. I have spent enough time in sport, and I realize that victory isn’t just the triumph of muscles and sinews. The roots of victories and defeats are in heads, in psychology. That’s why the Universiade is a great possibility to test young athletes, to reveal future champions. I hope many of present winners of Belgrade will successfully participate at the Olympic Games 2010 in London”, - Alexander Katushev noticed.

ATHLETICS. Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident and a person’s death
The famous Russian runner, 800 m Olympic champion Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident that happened at night September, 30 – October, 1 in Zhukovsky, Moscow region. The car accident resulted in a man’s death but the criminal case was not even started. Agency of sport information “All Sport” has learnt it from the personal trainer of Yury Borzakovsky – Vyacheslav Evstratov.
