Valery Silakov: part of the grants from “The Russian Olympians Foundation” we’ve spent on the luge equipment – and you can see the results

“The Russian Olympians Foundation” (whose founders are the 15 leading Russian businessmen, and the head of the Tutirial Council – Russian president Dmitry Medvedev) has realized the program “Vancouver-2010”. According to this program, all the athletes who were the candidates for participation on the Winter Olympic Games-2010 were getting 45 thousand rubles a month, and all the coaches and servicemen – 40 thousand rubles a month. The president of the Russian Luge and Naturban federation Valery Silakov told to the Agency of sport information “All Sport” about the significance of this program for his kind of sport.

“Russian luge athletes can appreciate what it feels – not to think about what you have to eat – probably more than anybody else, - Valery Silakov smiled. – In this sense we are not very spoilt. We had specially difficult times in the 1990-s. I remember, back then, we together with Albert Demchenko were making money on the side as taxi drivers – in the evenings, after the training sessions. Our official salary was – 30 dollars. When I am now telling about this to my friends from Germany or Italy – they don’t believe. They are asking: “This was your rate for a day or an hour?” They are still thinking that it’s a joke. So we really appreciate now the grants from “The Russian Olympians Foundation”. Because we have the necessary experience to understand, how much important it is – to have a guaranteed and rather high income”.

“There was one quite material benefit from the grants of “The Russian Olympians Foundation”, - Valery Silakov went on. – Part of this money we have spent on buying the details for our luge. We were buying the details in Austria, Czech republic, Latvia. Why did we have to spend our own money? Because it is impossible to do with the help of state financial support. Luge is a highly individual thing. It’s impossible to plan beforehand how much you will need to make it perfect. At come moment the idea comes, you contact a producer and pay him from your own money. This is normal for our sport, there is nothing heroic here. That’s why the additional money helped a lot in the modernization of the luge of the whole Russian team – not only men team, as before, but also women and junior. The results of the season you can see. Tatyana Ivanova became the first since 1976 Russian European champion, and Semen Pavlichenko won the silver at the junior World championships”.

ATHLETICS. Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident and a person’s death
The famous Russian runner, 800 m Olympic champion Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident that happened at night September, 30 – October, 1 in Zhukovsky, Moscow region. The car accident resulted in a man’s death but the criminal case was not even started. Agency of sport information “All Sport” has learnt it from the personal trainer of Yury Borzakovsky – Vyacheslav Evstratov.
