WATER POLO. The European male Water Polo Qualification Tournament for Olympic Games 2008 may take place in Russia

The European Water Polo male Qualification Tournament before the Olympics-2008 in Beijing may take place in Russia. The first vice-president of Russian Water Polo Federation (RWPF), the Olympic champion Evgeny Sharonov informed about this fact the Agency of sport information “All Sport” when summing up the results of Water Polo team at the FINA World Championship in Melbourne.

“Russian teams showed absolutely different results at this World championship, -- stated Evgeniy Sharonov. -- The female team won bronze medals, but I’m sure they were able to win gold. Any way the medals of World Championship are certainly a great success. The male team didn’t get in the semifinals, as we expected, and they took only the 7th place. Only by the end of the tournament they managed to show their potential. Perhaps our sportsmen were unsettled by the events that happened just before the championship, when some leaders left the team because of the refusals and the injuries. I completely agree with the head coach of the team: we need time. The RWPF executive board will take place very soon where experts, coaches and veterans are going to evaluate the results of this World Championship. We will also study the reports of the coaches. In Melbourne there were almost all the coaches of the Russian first league teams, and I’m sure we’ll have a lot to discuss”.

As Evgeny Sharonov said, it would be difficult for Russian male team to qualify for the Olympic Games-2008 this year. “This year 2007 there will be two Qualification tournaments in for the Olympics in Beijing -- the World League and the European Water Polo Qualification Tournament. Only the winners of these tournaments will qualify for the Olympic Games 2008. After the team of Croatia has won the World Championship and got the place in Beijing 2008 the place for European Qualification in September -- croatian Split -- has lost its actuality. Greece, Italy and Russia have already given their applications. Today I have already spoken to the chief of the FINA technical committee Janny Ponza and he confirmed that the decision would be taken soon. Certainly, if Russia gets the right to carry out the competitions, Russian male team has more chances to win the European Water Polo Qualification Tournament” -- Evgeny Sharonov said.

ATHLETICS. Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident and a person’s death
The famous Russian runner, 800 m Olympic champion Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident that happened at night September, 30 – October, 1 in Zhukovsky, Moscow region. The car accident resulted in a man’s death but the criminal case was not even started.
