OLYMPICS. Vitaly Smirnov: for doping scandals in the Olympic Games the IOC will punish not only athletes, coaches and doctors, but also National Olympic Committees

In the war against doping in professional sport there will be next unprecedented strict measures. Soon the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will take the decision about the punishment for breaking the anti doping rules not only athletes, coaches and doctors, but also National Olympic Committees (NOC). The Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) is also under risk. After the meeting of the ROC Executive Board the honorable president of the ROC, the third oldest member of the IOC Vitaly Smirnov shared this information with the Agency of sport information “All Sport”.

Recently I came back from Lausanne, the headquarters of the IOC, where the meeting of a commission was held, -- Vitaly Smirnov said. – And I want to tell you that the IOC prepares the next strict and fair measures for using forbidden medicine and methods and for breaking the anti doping rules. Very soon they will take the decision about the sanctions not only to athletes, coaches and doctors, but to the National Olympic Committees. The story in the Olympic Games in Turin, when they found in the residence of the Austrian team the illegal laboratory, made them to do it. In spite of the fact that the Austrian NOC tried to move away from the situation, the IOC insists on penalties not only for the law breakers (recently the IOC Executive board in Beijing sentenced six Austrian skiers and biathlon athletes to the life suspention from participation in the Olympic Games at any kind), but also the NOC. The argumentation is simple and fair: the NOC is responsible for everything that is happing with the team and the athletes in the Olympic Games. I think the Austrian NOC will be sentenced at least to the huge fine. Most probably, the Austrians won’t get money for the participation in the Olympic Games. Although, the sanctions may be stricter, even more cruel”.

Vitaly Smirnov has paid attention to the fact that the Russian Olympic Committee is also in the risk zone. “In the previous year the Russian Weight Lifting Federation hardly avoided the suspention and non-participation in the Olympic Games in Beijing for mass doping exposures. They escaped with the huge fine, but for the moment they are under total control. This year the Russian Swimming Federation turned to be in the suspended condition. If they have two more cases within the year 2007 – the Federation will be suspended, and Russian swimmers won’t be able to take part in the Olympic Games in Beijing 2008. I have been already friendly notified: Vitaly, keep it in your mind, you may have troubles”, -- Vitaly Smirnov said.

ATHLETICS. Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident and a person’s death
The famous Russian runner, 800 m Olympic champion Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident that happened at night September, 30 – October, 1 in Zhukovsky, Moscow region. The car accident resulted in a man’s death but the criminal case was not even started. Agency of sport information “All Sport” has learnt it from the personal trainer of Yury Borzakovsky – Vyacheslav Evstratov.
