OLYMPICS. Nick Davis: Balakhnichev has good chances to be elected to the IAAF Council

The President of the All-Russian Athletics Federation Valentin Balakhnichev has good chances to be elected to the Council of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) during the Congress, which will be held on August 21-23 in Osaka. The press attaché of the IAAF, the member of the development committee of the European Athletics Association Nick Davis shared this opinion with the Agency of sport information “All Sport”.

“At the IAAF Congress in Osaka the elections of the President, vice-presidents and all the 28 members of the IAAF Council will be held, -- Nick Davis said. – I think we will publish the official list of all the candidates till the 22’h of June. For the moment I can say for sure only that we have got only the only application for the position of the president – from the IAAF President Lamine Diack. So he will for sure remain on his position of the IAAF President for another four years. He has got ambitious program of the development of the world athletics around for this period. I know that the President of the All-Russian Athletics Federation Valentin Balakhnichev has sent an application for the elections to the IAAF Council. I think he has good chances to be elected. Russia is on the leading position in the European and World Athletics, Moscow has recently got the right to hold the World Championship – all these factors consolidate the position of Balakhnichev very much. Especially taking into consideration the fact that there is no representative of Russia in the Council for the moment”.

Nick Davis has also defined more precisely the procedure of the elections of the members of the Council. “During the first round of the elections three women will be elected, who will become the members of the Council. Then in the second round of the elections the other candidates will be elected. Each country has the right to present only one candidate – so, it is obvious, taking into consideration Balakhnichev’s application, that there won’t be women from Russia in the IAAF Council”, -- Nick Davis concluded.

ATHLETICS. Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident and a person’s death
The famous Russian runner, 800 m Olympic champion Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident that happened at night September, 30 – October, 1 in Zhukovsky, Moscow region. The car accident resulted in a man’s death but the criminal case was not even started. Agency of sport information “All Sport” has learnt it from the personal trainer of Yury Borzakovsky – Vyacheslav Evstratov.
