ATHLETICS. Valentin Balakhnichev: the competition to the IAAF Council is serious, but less than to the Russian Universities

The competition for the membership in the Council of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) will be serious, but less than to the Russian Universities. The President of the All-Russian Athletics Federation Valentin Balakhnichev joked this way in his interview to the Agency of sport information “All Sport”, when he commented the list of candidates to the IAAF Council, which was published by IAAF on June, 22, with elections will be held during the IAAF Congress in Osaka on August, 22-23.

“I am just studying the list of the candidates to the IAAF Council, -- Valentin Balakhnichev said. – Beside me 28 persons are registered. But actually there will be less competitors. The four will “leave” the list being elected for the post of the Vice-President and four women, who will be elected by quota. Total: 20 persons for 11 seats. The competition two persons per seat is serious, but less than in the Russian Universities. I can make you calm by this fact, but not myself. Actually this competition means the one thing: the claims have been announced by the persons, who can clearly estimate their chances. Certainly, the division on the leaders and the outsiders may take place. But this division is conventional. All the candidates to the IAAF Council are well-known to the athletics society, most of them are the presidents of the national federations, some of them have been the members of the Council for 20 years. From the other hand the result of the elections during exactly this Congress in Osaka will be more actual than all the previous ones. Four and especially eight years ago we learned about some of the candidates for the supervising posts at the moment we got their biographies directly during the Congress. Since that time the society has become more communicative. To find out who is who, what has who done, what does who offer, you can just enter the Internet. As to my ambitions… Certainly, I hope to be elected. I think my most strong points are: the first one – I represent Russia; the second one – I have been the head of the national federation for 17 years; the third one – our team very successfully compete in the international tournaments, claims to be the World leader; the fourth one – this country has been entrusted to carry out international athletics competitions, such as the Winter World Championship 2006, the Race Walking World Cup 2008, world Championship 2013; the fifth one – I know and have good contact with most of the presidents of the Asian and African Federations, we are preparing common programs. I can account it for a long time (laughing)”.

On our request to name the moments, which may have negative influence on the results of the elections to the IAAF Council, Valentin Balakhnichev said: “The constant brilliant success of the Russian athletes and all the Russian team may cause envy”.

ATHLETICS. Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident and a person’s death
The famous Russian runner, 800 m Olympic champion Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident that happened at night September, 30 – October, 1 in Zhukovsky, Moscow region. The car accident resulted in a man’s death but the criminal case was not even started.
