OLYMPICS. The ROC Athletes’ Commission recommends Alexandr Popov to the IOC Athletes’ Commission

The Athletes Commission of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) will most likely recommend for the elections to the Athletes’ Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) the four--time Olympic Champion, the member of the IOC Commission Alexandr Popov. The Vice-Head of the ROC Athletes’ Commission, the Olympic Champion Michael Nestruev told about it to the Agency of sport information “All Sport”.

“The Head of the Commission Olga Brusnikina is just coordinating for the moment the date of the nearest meeting with the ROC Heads, -- Michael Nestruev said. -- The main item at the agenda is the election of the candidate for the elections in the IOC Athletes’ Commission, which will be held during the Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing. It will be first offered to the ROC President Leonid Tyagachev, and then to the IOC. For the moment the term of the member of the IOC Commission Alexandr Popov comes to the end, and I know that the majority tends to offer his candidate to the elections again. Certainly, we will discuss all the offers, but according to my information, it will be Popov who will be offered. Certainly, I know that the IOC President Jacques Rogge during his meeting with the Russian President Vladimir Putin in Guatemala asked him to recommend Popov again. But it wasn’t official, and I don’t think it played the decisive role. Anyway, we have to define the candidate till the end of August”.

Earlier the third eldest IOC member Vitaly Smirnov, who was present at the meeting of Jacques Rogge and Vladimir Putin in Guatemala, said to the Agency of sport information “All Sport”: “Jacques Rogge expressed his wish the Russian Olympic Committee offered once again Alexandr Popov as the candidate to the member of the IOC Athletes’ Commission. He just said so: I ask you ROC offer Alexandr Popov to the IOC Athletes’ Commission. I can’t tell you what Vladimir Putin answered, it’s not my competition”. According to the non-official information, the candidates to the members of the IOC Athletes’ Commission also were: the Head of the ROC Athletes’ Commission, the member of the European Olympic Committee Athletes’ Commission, the three time Olympic Champion in Synchronized Swimming Olga Brusnikina and the member of the ROC Athletes’ Commission, the World, European and Olympic Champion, the World record holder in Pole Vault Elena Isinbaeva.

The famous Russian runner, 800 m Olympic champion Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident that happened at night September, 30 – October, 1 in Zhukovsky, Moscow region. The car accident resulted in a man’s death but the criminal case was not even started.
