OLYMPICS. Vitaly Smirnov: the introduction of the resolution in the USA House of Representatives calling for the boycott of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing is just a banal PR-action

The introduction of the resolution in the House of Representatives of the USA Congress on August, 6 calling for the official boycott of the Summer Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing because of the serious human rights abuses in China and the supporting of the governments in Sudan and North Korea, won’t have any consequences, it is just a banal PR-action. The honorable president of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), the third oldest member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Vitaly Smirnov expressed this opinion to the Agency of sport information “All Sport”.

“To tell the truth I haven’t heard about these initiatives of the USA legislators, -- Vitaly Smirnov said. -- But it changes nothing. The introduction of the resolution in the USA Congress calling for the boycott of the Olympic Games in Beijing is just a banal PR-action, nothing more. The time of boycotts whatever reasons the have is in the past and it is strange that they don’t understand it in the modern politics. The ex-president of the USA Jimmy Carter, who supported the boycott of the Olympic Games 1980 in Moscow, later sincerely repented of his decision. And for the moment there are no real reasons for the boycott. If the USA athletes don’t come to the Olympic Games in Beijing, only the USA will lose and nobody else. However, I don’t think they will do it. First of all, the biggest USA companies, which are the global sponsors of the IOC, will oppose these resolutions. The second is that the American TV company NBS have the rights for TV--translation of the Olympic Games in Beijing. More over, the NBS managed to get such schedule which is the most convenient to the American public -- it is enough to say that the finals in the Artistic Gymnastics and Swimming will be held in the morning Beijing time. That is why I am sure that the American sport fans will oppose the boycott. At last the American athletes won’t let do it. The USA National Olympic Committee, IOC, the Governments all over the World… I repeat the resolution of the boycott is just a banal PR-action. The World and the time have changed”.

The resolution of the boycott of the Olympic Games in Beijing is expected to be debated by the House Foreign Affairs Committee in early September. In the text of the document, the authors of which are eight lawmakers led by Dana Rohrabacher from the Republican Party, they say: “The USA Government should immediately take measures to boycott of the Olympic Games in Beijing on August 2008, unless China stops engaging in serious human rights abuses and stops supporting serious human rights abuses by the governments of Sudan, Myanmar and North Korea”.
