ATHLETICS. Sergey Bubka: IAAF needs such extraordinary people as Valentin Balakhnichev

On August, 22 the IAAF Council started working at the Osaka International Convention Center and the elections for the high governing positions took place. The special correspondents of the Agency of sport information “All Sport” managed to talk to the newly elected IAAF Vice-president, the Olympic champion Sergey Bubka, who is also the IOC member for Ukraine, the head of the athletes commission and the member of the IOC Executive Board, the president of the Ukrainian Olympic Committee.

- How can you explain your overwhelming leadership with the advantage of 26 votes at the election for the positions of vice-presidents?
- I don’t actually know the reason. It is very important and pleasant for me to get such a confidence from my colleagues, but it’s up to them, not to me, to explain why they made this choice (smiling). I think – no, I am even sure! – that it is not because of my sports awards which are now in the distant past. I believe that it is thanks to my work at the administrative and leading positions that I have been occupying since the end of my career. I am the head of the IOC athletes commission, the member of the IOC Executive board, the president of the Ukrainian Olympic Committee, have been the member of the IOC Council… But just the names of the positions are not so important. The most important thing are the projects and ideas which have been implemented with my help. They deal with the promotion of the athletics and the Olympic ideals, with defending the interests of the athletes, with the fight against doping and so on. I really managed to do much since I stopped competing myself. And now I have got the evidence that my work was not left unnoticed.

- What will be your functions as the IAAF vice-president? What areas and projects are you going to follow?
- I have been working at the IAAF for long, that’s why I know that my work won’t be limited with some separate area. I will have to deal with everything – with organizing and holding competitions, promoting and reforming of athletics… There are so many things. Almost all the things!

- What can you say about the election to the IAAF Council of the President of the All-Russian athletics federation Valentin Balakhnichev?
- We have been friends for a long time. And even moreover – we hold the same views on life (smiling). Valentin is a high level professional, very initiative and extraordinary person. He has always had lots of interesting projects, original and sometimes revolutionary ideas. I am very happy that Russia gained back the place at the IAAF Council. And I am especially happy that Valentin Balakhnichev was the person to take this place.

- May we hope that you support his ideas about introducing the 300 and 200-meter standard lap, doping suspension not only for the athlete but also for the coach and doctor…
- I know all his ideas excellent. We meet each other often and talk a lot. Athletics and sports on the whole need his ideas. Of course he can count on my support. And I always hope for his support too.

- Before the Council Valentin Balakhnichev assumed that in four years, when the last term of the current president Lamine Diack ends, you will become the next IAAF President.
- Let’s not discuss this topic. I have just what I have now. And for the moment it’s enough for me. I have to work next four years as a vice-resident, show myself… On the whole, I don’t want to talk about it.

ATHLETICS. Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident and a person’s death
The famous Russian runner, 800 m Olympic champion Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident that happened at night September, 30 – October, 1 in Zhukovsky, Moscow region. The car accident resulted in a man’s death but the criminal case was not even started. Agency of sport information “All Sport” has learnt it from the personal trainer of Yury Borzakovsky – Vyacheslav Evstratov.

The great Russian wrestler, three times Olympic champion, the Hero of Russia and now the member of the State Duma Alexandre Karelin will be the guest of the team meetings in free style wrestling Russia – USA and Republic Cabardino-Balkaria – USA, that are scheduled in Nalchik on January, 30. TENNIS. Shamil Tarpischev: by the end of the year one of the Russians will head the WTA rating
By the end of 2007 one of the Russian tennis players will for sure head the rating of Women tennis association (WTA). Such an opinion the president of yhe Russian tennis federation Shamil Tarpischev expressed to the Agency of sport information “All Sport”.
