ATHLETICS. Yelena Isinbaeva: I accomplished the primary task – I won, and world records haven’t left me, I believe in this

On August, 28 the women’s pole vault final was held at the World Athletics Championship in Osaka. Predictably the victory went to Russia’s Yelena Isinbaeva, after jumping 4.80 m. After the tournament she explained to the special correspondents of the Agency of sport information “All Sport” in Osaka why it lacked the splendor of a world record.

- Lena, it seemed that your emotions and confidence were insufficient for success at the record height of 5.02.
- Yes, that’s so. But there are reasons for this. First, my coach Vitaliy Petrov and I set a task for this World Championships – to win. These were my first official world-level competitions under Vitaliy Afanasevich's management, if we don’t consider the winter world championships in Moscow. And it was absolutely necessary to win. Secondly, I had to wait a very long time for each attempt. I lost concentration, tightened up, cooled off... And as a result I lost energy that I needed for 5.02. I admit: after I took 4.80 and none of the other girls were able to do so, I exhaled. Very well, I won. But I would’ve been glad if any of the girls took 4.80. This would’ve given me motivation to jump 4.90, to maintain my fighting attitude. But it came out as it came out. I managed the primary task, and world records haven’t left me, I believe in it.

- Does it bother you or make you happy that none of your rivals, despite the occasional small delay – like today, all at once, in five cm – are able to give you real competition?
- When I compete, I don’t turn my attention to anyone else. But of course, high results only give birth to healthy competition. Remember: I set all my prior records in competition, occasionally very stiff competition. Naturally I’ll be glad if the girls improve. And I believe this will happen, moreover very soon. Today they jumped very well at 4.75. And next year there will be held the Olympics, so I’m sure the results will grow to 4.80-4.85. And then … (laughing) just put dots.

- And what are your immediate plans?
- On August, 30 I am flying back to Italy. The “Golden League” stage in Zurich is on 7 September and I still need time to acclimatize. Although, I really want to stay and support the team. Indeed, before the start of the World Championships I was selected as the team leader – of both the men and women moreover. Earlier there were separate leaders. But when we gathered here the guys proposed to make me the united leader. There’s a lot of organizational work. For example, we discussed that our athletes are not at all evident in the stands. Either they’re not coming to support their teammates, or they’re seated unsystematically. We’ll fix that!

- As the leader has it been necessary to rebuke or punish anyone? For example, discus thrower Darya Pishchalnikova for sure deserved a smack in the head for her disgraceful performance in Osaka?
- No, not at all! I stick to other methods. One needs to teach, explain, suggest.

- So tell us, to whom did you shout into the camera: “I love you!”?
- I shouted to my parents, my sister... And about “love” – my nephew, who is only two months old.

ATHLETICS. Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident and a person’s death
The famous Russian runner, 800 m Olympic champion Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident that happened at night September, 30 – October, 1 in Zhukovsky, Moscow region. The car accident resulted in a man’s death but the criminal case was not even started. Agency of sport information “All Sport” has learnt it from the personal trainer of Yury Borzakovsky – Vyacheslav Evstratov.
