ATHLETICS. Anna Chicherova: I’m the second?! Not the third?! That’s so wonderful!!!

On September, 2 in Osaka the World Athletics Championships were completed. Predictably Blanka Vlasic from Croatia won the women’s high jump competition. She cleared 2.05 m, but failed all three attempts to raise the World record to 2.10. Russian Anna Chicherova set the personal record of 2.03. But she learned that she had finished in the second place in the mixed zone from the special correspondents of the Agency of sport information “All Sport”.

“I won silver?!” exclaimed Anna Chicherova with completely sincere astonishment. “It can’t be! I have bronze. Because I only cleared 2.00 on my second attempt, the Italian Di Martino is the second and I’m the third. She also only cleared 2.00 on the second attempt?! It works out I’m the second?! Not the third?! That’s so wonderful!!! I was so absorbed with myself that I even missed how the competition was unfolding! This means Vlasic got gold, and both Di Martino and me silver. Well then congratulations to me! Honestly speaking, today I didn’t jump abnormally well. That is, it was like usual. At the early heights I’m always very nervous, most likely due to the pressing responsibility – I need to catch myself and hold back... But if I continue to compete, internally I’m set free, and I jump almost for my own pleasure. You know how it goes: my brain is all at once liberated. Here in Osaka I probably crossed the border at the height of 1.97. Yes, right at 1.97 I was somewhat nervous. Indeed, I told you after qualification that I was expecting to jump higher than two meters and to not clear 1.97 would be a complete failure. But I cleared it, and at 2.00 and 2.03 I was already jumping calmly and relaxed. But now at 2.05, I probably even went too far with the relaxation. I really wanted it badly - and my motions became somewhat uncontrolled, chaotic; my technique completely fell apart. But nevertheless I’m very satisfied. Now the main thing is not to get mixed up; to climb on the second step at the awards ceremony, since indeed I’d already resigned myself, you might say, to third place. True, it will be a bit tight there together with Di Martino. But although she’s small, I’ll take my place somehow.”

Anna Chicherova also said that more important than the World Championship medal for her is the confidence and memory of jumping so high, which she regains with each new start after numerous injuries. “These are already my third World Championships, after Paris-2003 and Helsinki-2005. And they’re the first in which I’ve won a medal. This medal is very important for me, but still more important is the confidence I’ve got after jumping 2.03. This, by the way, is my personal record outdoors. A long time ago I consistently jumped two meters. But the last few seasons I’ve been literally tortured by injuries. There were problems with my vertebrae, and lately pains in my feet. And so it came out that I forgot how to jump high. After the All-Russian Championships in Tula, where I cleared 2.01, not only did confidence began returning to me, but some muscular, genetic memory of jumping high. And now it’s even more firmly embedded,” -- Anna Chicherova said.

The famous Russian runner, 800 m Olympic champion Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident that happened at night September, 30 – October, 1 in Zhukovsky, Moscow region. The car accident resulted in a man’s death but the criminal case was not even started.
