ATHLETICS. Yelena Sobolyeva: for some reason this time Yulia Fomenko and I did not agree about the team tactics

On September, 2 the World Athletics Championships completed in Osaka. Maryam Yusuf Jamal from Bahrain won the final of the women’s 1500 m. The world leader this season, Russia’s Yelena Sobolyeva, settled for the silver medal. Yelena Sobolyeva acknowledged to the special correspondents of the Agency of sport information “All Sport” in Osaka that she was disappointed.

“Of course I’m disappointed,” said Yelena Sobolyeva. “I arrived in Osaka with the best result in the world this season, was very well prepared, and with an enormous desire to win. I thought before the final: if the race is fast, I’ll start to slow it down, I won’t pull out at first, but after 800 m I’ll begin to slowly pull apart and break up the leading group. But it came out the other way around. It was necessary for me to determine everything myself - to go to the front, to drag my rivals behind me. This is very difficult. As a result I lost to Jamal at the very end. I saw that she was quite ready. Furthermore, her semi-final was especially tactical – 11 seconds slower than mine. And it was necessary for me to run 4:03 with a very fast finish – in this heavy, stuffy, moist weather this was a very serious expense. And the very freshness I left in the semi-final was insufficient for me at the finish in the final. But now I think that for victory I didn’t so much lack freshness, as team tactics. If Yulia Chizhenko and I had run together, I think it would have been easier and more successful. But for some reason we didn’t agree about the team tactics this time. How do we usually negotiate? Somehow it works out by itself. We run into each other: “How’s it going? How are you feeling? So how do you intend to run? And let’s try to stay together.” And we start to look for compromises, who does what and when as the race progresses. We make these calculations to get a little separation already, and then contest the finish between ourselves. It came out this way for us at the most recent big tournaments – the European championships and the winter world championships. But somehow here we never even had a conversation. I don’t know, maybe Yulya didn’t feel herself ready for accomplishing big tasks, or perhaps on the contrary, she wanted to do everything independently. Now I’m not saying that’s how it was, I’m just discussing it. We learned a good lesson today. In the future we’ll be cleverer.”

In spite of the defeat, Yelena Sobolyeva she said that her preparation for the World Championships were structured correctly – and they will definitely be replicated for the Olympic season. “My coach and I did everything correctly. Primarily we correctly figured the acclimatization. I arrived at the very end of the period of the competitions – on the day of the preliminary round, but it had no influence. I think, in the Olympic season we’ll repeat the same schedule - especially taking into account that the Games will take place in a similar temperature and climatic zone, under the same severe conditions,” said Yelena Sobolyeva.

The famous Russian runner, 800 m Olympic champion Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident that happened at night September, 30 – October, 1 in Zhukovsky, Moscow region. The car accident resulted in a man’s death but the criminal case was not even started.
