OLYMPICS. FIDE is going to bring a suit against IOC for refusal to include chess in the program of the Olympic Games

The World Chess Federation (FIDE) considers the opportunity of bringing a legal suit to the Court Arbitration of Sport in Lausanne (CAS) against the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for refusal to include chess in the Olympic programme. The FIDE President, the President of the Kalmykiya Republic Kirsan Ilyumshzinov told about it to the Agency of sport information “All Sport”.

“The International Chess Federation (FIDE) was founded in 1924, -- Kirsan Ilyumshzinov reminded. -- And from the very beginning FIDE undertakes attempts that chess would be included in the program of the Olympic Games. But for the latest decades we didn’t manage to break stereotypes of the IOC officials -- well, they don’t respect intellectual kinds of sport! Although, according to the public opinion, sports is the kind of activity when works not only the body, but brains. And, certainly, not only chess, but other kinds of sport, united in the International Association of Intellectual Sports (IMSA) -- checkers, bridge and go deserve to be included in the program of the Olympic Games. What kind of comparisons we have heard! Football players say: we play with feet, but win with brains. Basketball players say: we play with hands, but win with brains. But certainly, curling surpassed everybody. The campaign of including this kind of sport in the program of the Olympic Games passed with a slogan: “Curling is chess on ice”. Recently, I saw the tape of the IOC Session during which the banners with this slogan were hanged. The campaign passed successfully, curling is a kind of sports, at which they tinder with mops on ice, which became the Olympic sport. And chess still remains on the periphery of the attention of the IOC authority. I even don’t say about the fact, that chess is developing all over the World, and curling -- only in several tens. Although, chess and bridge were officially acknowledged by the IOC in 1999, but the status of the Olympic sports wasn’t received. So, for the moment we consider the opportunity of bringing an action to the CAS against the IOC for refusal to include chess in the program of the Olympic Games. It is too early to tell about our chances to win, but we can at least attract attention to this problem. Don’t you think it is a strange situation: “chess on ice” is the Olympic kind of sport, and classical chess -- no?!”

ATHLETICS. Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident and a person’s death
The famous Russian runner, 800 m Olympic champion Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident that happened at night September, 30 – October, 1 in Zhukovsky, Moscow region. The car accident resulted in a man’s death but the criminal case was not even started. Agency of sport information “All Sport” has learnt it from the personal trainer of Yury Borzakovsky – Vyacheslav Evstratov.
