OLYMPICS. Alexander Nefedov: for the Organizing Committee “Sochi-2014” I have got the bad news, which is the historical challenge

The activity of the Organizing Committees for the preparation and holding of the Winter Olympic Games has never yet been profitable. It is bad news and the historical challenge for the Organizing Committee “Sochi-2014” and its General Director Dmitry Chernyshenko, who has just started working. Alexander Nefedov, the principal, the board member, the head of the department “Tourism, sports and show business” of the Roland Berger Strategy Consultants told the details to the Agency of sport information “All Sport”.

“I have got bad new for the Organizing Committee “Sochi-2014”, -- Alexander Nefedov notified at once. -- The activity of the previous Organizing Committees of preparation and holding of the Winter Olympic Games has never yet been profitable. We studied the work of the Organizing Committees of the last Winter Olympic Games in correlation “incomes/costs” they all turned to be unprofitable. The losses of the Organizing Committee “Lake Placid-80” were $18 million, “Sarajevo-84” -- $200 million, “Calgary-88” -- $40 million, “Albertville-92” -- $60 million, “Lillehammer-96” -- $350 million, “Nagano-98” -- $50 million, “Salt Lake City-2002” -- $50 million, “Torino-2006” -- $40 million. It is important to note that we are talking about the activity of the Organizing Committee itself. In incomes we included the payment of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), contracts with sponsors, sales of the marketing rights and rights for the television broadcast, tickets sales. In costs we included the salary of the staff, operational expends, advertising and PR-programs. The building of the facilities and creation of the infrastructure weren’t included in the costs, so the comparison of the activity of different Organizing Committees is correct. The latest example is “Torino-2006”. The Italians planned to get a light “plus” -- the income of $50 million. And they turned to be in almost unruffled “minus”. $90 million of difference occurred not because of the bad realization of the sponsors’ and marketing programs. In that sphere everything went on according to the plan. But the organizing Committee seriously underestimated the staff and operational expends”.

Alexander Nefedov also said that the statistics, he adduced here, isn’t just the bad news for the Organizing Committee “Sochi-2014” but also the historical challenge. “Dmitry Chernyshenko has a chance to make the work of the Organizing Committee of the Winter Olympic Games profitable for the first time -- as well as the same chance all the General Directors of the all the previous Organizing Committees had. Two moments are most important for reaching this goal: the first one is the correct adequate planning of the incomes and costs, the second one is the strict control of the costs”, -- Alexander Nefedov adviced.
