ATHLETICS. Manager: Despite the Association of Athletics Managers’ decision, I will not refuse to work with Lysenko and Khoroshikh

Pavel Voronkov, manager of the Russian hammer throwers Tatiana Lysenko and Ekaterina Khoroshikh, whose case of the suspension for the use of doping substances is under consideration by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), will not refuse to work with them, despite the decision to no longer represent the interests of athletes who have been suspended for a period of two or more years reached by the Association of Athletics Managers in Miami Beach on November 11th. Pavel Voronkov stated this to the Agency of Sport Information "All Sport".

“At the Association of Athletics Managers’ meeting, a proposal was introduced to no longer represent the interests of athletes who had been suspended for a period of two or more years,” recounted Pavel Voronkov. “This proposal goes along with the global trend of the fight against doping. Earlier the association of organizers of the Euromeetings international competitions, which comprise the 44 largest tournaments on the athletics calendar, came out with a similar initiative. It is actually quite important for us managers to have an understanding about our collaboration with Euromeetings, and in Miami Beach it was achieved. As a result, the proposal was accepted at the Association meeting, although not unanimously. I and three other members voted against it, and several others abstained. The new rule will not be retroactive and it applies to athletes who are currently serving a disqualification and those sentenced in the future. For my part, I consider it is wrong to betray people with whom I’ve been working for long, who trust me, and to make blanket rulings without examining each case individually. I doubt, by the way, that the Euromeetings organizers themselves will strictly abide by their decision. On the contrary, I’m more than confident that if, let’s say, the American Justin Gatlin returns after his eight year suspention and runs the 100 m in 9.8 seconds, you won’t find them so principle that they’ll all refuse to have Gatlin at their tournament. There is a bunch of legal nuances and loopholes that will allow athletes, managers and organizers to continue to collaborate. In my view, indiscriminate charges and the hanging of labels are simply wrong.”

Voronkov also explained how the decision will be reflected in his collaboration with women’s hammer throw world record holder Tatiana Lysenko and with Ekaterina Khoroshikh, about whom the doping suspension is currently under consideration by the IAAF. “It would be quite foolish from my side if I were to simply refuse to work with Lysenko and Khoroshikh. People would lose respect for me, and I could not respect myself. Tanya and Katya were naturally upset after reading on the Internet about the decision accepted by the Association. They immediately called me, but I reassured them: “Just take care of your business; there’s no cause for concern.” As I said, the procedure for implementing the Association’s decision isn’t formally prescribed, and in any case, the possibility for cooperation remains. I don’t think this will have any consequence for us. Furthermore, since Lysenko and Khoroshikh’s affair remains in the examination stage, who knows, maybe they won’t be suspended at all, or maybe they’ll be suspended for one year. Then all these decisions won’t have any effect at all on the girls. Now Lysenko and Khoroshikh are training, and are maintaining a positive attitude on the whole,” described Voronkov.

The famous Russian runner, 800 m Olympic champion Yury Borzakovsky was found not guilty in the car accident that happened at night September, 30 – October, 1 in Zhukovsky, Moscow region. The car accident resulted in a man’s death but the criminal case was not even started.
